Backpack Drive and Having Spiritual Conversations – October 2015

sharingJoseph had the privilege of leading a training time for the young adults of  our partnership, Renew Church.  Renew Church was the church we helped plant the summer of 2014 and they are now about 130 people strong with 3 elders and various leadership teams.  Pastor Wilson had asked Joseph if he would be willing to share at their young adult group on how to have spiritual conversations with others.  Every month Renew Church has a Saturday outreach to the apartments around them.  They use these times (barbecues, taco bars, desserts) to create spaces for conversations with others through a meal together. It is a time to share Christ with those in the apartments near the church and invite them to church.  Joseph enjoyed sharing with the young adults and encouraging them in how to have spiritual conversations with those who come to the Saturday outreaches.

Reaching out to the Community of South Los Angeles

Why Church Planting?

“The vigorous, continual planting of new congregations is the single         most crucial  strategy for:                                                                                   1) the numerical growth of the Body of Christ in any city, and                     2) the continual corporate renewal and revival of the existing churches in a city.

Nothing else–not crusades, outreach programs, para-church ministries, growing mega-churches, congregational consulting, nor church renewal processes–will have the consistent impact of dynamic, extensive church planting.”  Tim Keller—Why Plant Churches

Some of the members of the launch team for Epiphany Fellowship Los Angeles!

We have been partnering with Epiphany Fellowship LA as they are planting a church in South Central Los Angeles.  Through         prayer-walking times through the neighborhoods we have been able to learn about the needs of the community and have seen 2 people accept the Lord so far.  Fatimah (Pastor Tommy’s wife) recently led another woman (Fatima as well) to the Lord at the neighborhood park.  Pastor Tommy led a man, Horacio, to the Lord also.  Please pray for Fatimah and Horacio as Pastor Tommy and Fatimah are trying to meet with them both for new believer   follow-up and that they would grow in their relationship with Jesus. IMG_0348.2015-08-01_183052

We have been helping Epiphany Fellowship with outreach and            evangelism times to the community of South Central Los Angeles and  Joseph is training the launch team on new believer training.

Below is the first of 2 vision nights for the church.  We invited the community to hear the vision of Epiphany Fellowship forming in their neighborhood.  A Christ Centered Church that will be             multi-generational and multi-ethnic.  2015-08-08_023629535_29F2F_iOSPlease pray that Epiphany Fellowship would be a light to Los Angeles and many people within the community would come to know the Lord.

Cru15 Conference!

“Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.” Mark 16:15

We recently returned from a National Cru Conference in Colorado that happens every 2 years.  We gathered with over 5,000 staff from around the nation and heard challenging, powerful speakers to encourage us in our faith and in the ministry the Lord has called us to. We were also able to meet some of the leadership of the new ministry we are involved in, Cru City.  Here is a glimpse of some of our personal notes we took and how the Lord spoke to us!

Partnerships – “Our partnership should reflect our intention of making people to be Like Christ.”  “The heart of partnership starts from relationship first.”  “Two parts of great partnering: deeply value others and wholeheartedly show up with all I am.”                                                                 Greg and Charmaine Lillestrand   (Cru City Executive Director)

“The Christian life is the outliving of the inliving Christ.”  “Justice and Racism is an economic issue of oppression. It is Artificial! We have the answer! We have found what Abraham found – we are one people with one true God! He has called us to join Him in that Redemptive Reconciliation work.”  Dr. John Perkins (author and speaker)

“Faith is not a Feeling, it is a choice we make to take God at His Word!”  Ney Bailey (staff with Cru for 46 years)

“Do we have boldness to preach the Gospel? Ecstatic and in Love with the Gospel personally.”  “Movements of God are fueled with people who are deeply in love with Jesus!”  “Let’s get back to the Word and back to the authority of what it says!” Francis Chan (author and church planter)

Cru City Update…

DSC_0056

As we begin our 17th year with Cru God has led us to transition into another division within Cru. As we shared last month, this Fall we are desiring to go beyond college campuses into the communities of Los Angeles!  God has put into our hearts the passion to be a part of Meeting the City’s Deepest Needs.  We are transitioning to a ministry in Cru called Cru City!  One aspect of Cru City we will be involved in is helping church planters plant churches that will plant other churches.  One church planter we are working with is Tommy and his wife, Fatimah.  Tommy and his family have moved to South LA (near USC) from Philadelphia—to plant Epiphany Fellowship LA, which is a church plant of Epiphany  Fellowship Philadelphia.  Please pray for them as they transition to LA, begin to build community in South LA, and find a few key leaders to begin to work with as they start the church plant. forresters1

This summer we will also celebrate 17 years on staff with Cru! God has so blessed us throughout these years and we truly believe that our best years of ministry are before us! That’s one reason why we are so excited about our US Staff Conference in Fort Collins, Colorado this summer. As we gather with over 5,000 fellow U.S. staff and hear from our leadership and other  Christian speakers, we anticipate that God will broaden our perspective for the world, equip us to be more effective in our  ministry roles within Cru City, and enable us to go forth to bear even more fruit.  We are excited to hear from Dr. John Perkins (founder of a reconciliation, leadership training organization), Francis Chan (author and speaker), James White (Pastor of Christ our King Community Church) and many others.  Please pray for our travel to and from Colorado and that the Lord would use the time greatly in our lives. 9349877846_d2223094d6_m

Cru City

Cru City – Kingdom citizens advancing the mission of Jesus for the well-being of the city.

This summer we celebrate 17 years of ministering with Cru!  When Joseph and I first joined the staff of Cru we knew the Lord was calling us into full-time ministry and are so thankful He has given us the blessing and privilege to serve Him full-time all these years.  It continues to be a life of faith, trust building in seeing His provisions, an adventure in walking with Him and amazing joy in watching Him work in the lives of the students we minister to.  There is nothing we would rather do in life than serve Him fully.  Thank you for being a huge part in allowing us to serve the Lord full-time through your prayers and generosity.

This Fall we are desiring to go beyond college campuses into the communities of Los Angeles!  As we have grown older each year (and the gap between our ages and the college students increases ) and grown in our passions and gifts the Lord has given us, we are excited to share with you the next steps we feel God is calling us to!  He has put in us a desire to reach beyond the college campuses into the communities around us.  Our hearts are burdened to see communities reached with the love of Jesus through adoption ministries, fighting sex trafficking within Los Angeles and helping to plant churches within communities that are not being reached.  God has put into our hearts the passion to be a part of Meeting the City’s Deepest Needs.  We are transitioning to a ministry in Cru called Cru City!  Since we will be working with church planters that are located near a University we will still connect with college students—challenging them and working with them to be a part of reaching their communities around them.  We are so excited about this next step the Lord has called us to and ask you to please pray for us and the work the Lord is going to do in reaching the communities of Los Angeles!

The Heart of Cru City:

“For many, life in the city offers only a bleak existence. The bitter realities of human slavery, homelessness, neglect, and food insecurity plague the lives of countless men, women, and children in cities around the globe. Although none of these issues are easy to solve, the love of Jesus compels us, followers of Jesus and kingdom citizens, to action. Cru is partnering with hundreds of like-minded churches and passionate organizations in an effort to catalyze Gospel transformation and bring light to the darkest places of the city.”

Students Lives Being Changed…

sendWe recently had a Vision Night and students shared their testimonies and how the Lord has been working in their lives.  One student, Kevin (from Cal Poly Pomona), shared his story….

Kevin grew up in a very difficult home.  Anger permeated everything and his parents were continually yelling and fighting with one another.  Many times bottles would fly across the room and neighbors would call the police.  Police would appear on their doorsteps often to access the situation.  As Kevin began High School he became very involved in partying and drinking.  He began to steal and vandalize property.  The party culture he attempted to be friends with rejected him and he was a depressed teenager.  He graduated and went to college where he was assigned a Christian roommate in his housing.  It was through his roommate that Kevin experienced a real acceptance for the first time.  His roommate invited him to Epic (Cru’s Asian American ministry) on campus and it was there he experienced a real love and genuine friendships for the first time as well.  Kevin became very involved in Bible Studies through Epic—desiring to learn more about this Jesus the students believed in.  This past Fall Kevin went with his Epic friends to our Fall Retreat in the mountains.  Joseph was one of the speakers and Kevin shared how through the Fall Retreat talks he felt as though something was stirring within him.  Jared, a staff member on his campus, shared the gospel with him during the Fall Retreat and Kevin accepted the Lord into his heart!  Since then he has been growing in incredible ways in his relationship with Jesus!  He is meeting with another student leader on campus for discipleship and very involved in the ministry on campus.  He attended our Epic Winter Conference in January where he shared that he was so excited to see the Lord use him to share his faith with others for the first time!  And now he is preparing to go on a summer mission trip with Epic to San Francisco—where he will spend 6 weeks ministering to the people of San Francisco and grow in his own love for Jesus.

Praise God for always working in students, like Kevin’s, lives!  We love seeing hearts changed and lives transformed for His glory alone!

Need Prayer?

Prayer Tent at Pasadena City College

This past month our ministry at PCC hosted a Prayer Tent on campus.  We had a table set up in the Quad area from 10-2pm and offered prayer to students in need.  We also gave out free waters and Otter-Pop Popsicles to students in between classes in the heat.

Josh, one of our student  at PCC, had the idea to offer prayer to the students on campus. He came up with the plan and was excited to see it come to fruit.  Josh is also a youth leader at his church and has been a blessing to us at PCC because of his heart for Jesus and his passion to reach out to other students on campus with the love of Jesus!

Thank you for continuing to pray for the students on the college campuses!  Prayer is powerful and we are thankful for The Lord continuing to move in the hearts of students.

Don’t pray when you feel like it. Have an appointment with the Lord and keep it. A man is powerful on his knees. ~ Corrie Ten Boom

Sixty One Conference!

DSC_0337

“He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives, and release from darkness for the prisoners…”

This was our theme for this years Epic Conference.  Over 400 students and staff from CA, AZ, HI, MN, WI and WA came together to learn more about the Lord through engaging speakers, workshops                      and dynamic worship.

photo 5One day of our conference was “the Day of Faith” where the students went out to serve different communities and to share their faith.  Our family and students were a part of  reaching the homeless, who gather in nearby parks and live in communities under bridges.  We partnered with, Danny, who was formerly homeless and now has a ministry to the homeless community.  It was very eye-opening as we hiked down the riverbed, under the bridges for two miles to a women’s homeless community filled with tents.  We talked to the women, heard their stories, gave them water, socks and jackets and prayed for them.  Danny    continues to visit them twice a week as he build relationships and shares God’s love with them.  He has led 11 homeless to the Lord and helped them find jobs and homes though partnerships he has with other organizations.  It is an amazing ministry!

It was definitely a “Day of Faith” for our students to reach out beyond their comfort zones and see people in deep needs right around them.  Our children were touched as well and gained a deeper heart for those who are hurting, as they would walk ahead with Danny to watch him engage with the homeless and offer up jackets and waters to the women.

Thankful for all God’s Workings!

Joseph - CSULA, Samuel - PCC (2)

As we reflect on this past year in ministry we are thankful for God’s work on the campuses: our Uncovered Event at CSULA; the Fullerton Summer Project we were able to be a part of, and one of our recent CSULA grads joining our team as an intern after graduating!  But one of our greatest passions and joys is seeing students involved with us reaching out to their friends and those friends coming to know the Lord!  This year in ministry we saw Mary (from PCC) lead Leslie to the Lord, Alex (from UCLA) reaching out to the fraternities before he graduated, Caleb (from CSULA) being instrumental in International student, Ivan, coming to the Lord before returning to Taiwan, and Joseph with many of our CSULA students being used to bring John to the Lord!                  We LOVE seeing new lives in Jesus begin!

Another Recent Praise! At our Fall Retreat this past month one student, Kevin, shared that he wasn’t a Christian and dealt with loneliness and acceptance.  On Saturday evening Kevin was impacted by the love and grace that Joseph spoke on. In the discussion groups             afterwards, students asked if he could rate his desire to know God personally on a scale from  1-10.   7.5 was his response. Students shared the gospel with him and asked him if he would be interested in starting a personal relationship with God.

Kevin expressed that he was interested and he shared some misconceptions that he had about God. ” I didn’t know that God still cared about me. This weekend, I realized that even when I mess up, he still loves me.” Kevin prayed to receive Christ that Saturday and his life is forever changed!

De-Recognized on Cal State Los Angeles

Cal_State_LA

This Fall the 23 campuses of the California State University system has begun enforcing an “all comers” policy. What this means is that leadership in any recognized student organization must be open to all students. Campus ministries like Cru, InterVarsity, Navigators, and many others will no longer be able to select student leaders based on their religious beliefs.  We were recently dechartered at Cal State Los Angeles, and we know that Long Beach State, San Diego State, and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo have been de-recognized as well – which saddens us greatly.

Recognition as a club on campus allows us to use campus meeting space for Bible Studies and outreaches, to advertise on campus, and participate in things like the student welcome week.  It also communicates that we’re part of the larger campus community and approved by the campus to be there.

Please know that regardless of current or future policy changes,we are committed to actively ministering on campus. Whether or not we are formally recognized by the university, we will continue to be involved in the lives of students and serve the larger campus.

Please be praying for us as we begin to navigate ministry at Cal State Los Angeles no longer recognized as a club on campus.  It will be much harder to use a room on campus, host events and outreaches and post flyers advertising our meetings.  We are confident the Lord is in control and will continue to move in the lives of students there though!  We were encouraged just a couple weeks ago as we saw a student accept the Lord at CSULA!

As you may remember we have had 2 students regularly attending our Bible Studies and events at CSULA that were not believers.  They became involved with us through the outreach we did last year “Uncovered” and have been asking good questions and seeking to know more about Jesus.

One of these students—John – made a decision to trust in Christ a couple weeks ago!  Joseph and various students involved in our ministry have been answering his questions, praying for him, and sharing their faith with him over the past 6 months.  It was during a recent event that he made the decision to give his life over to Jesus and put his faith in Him!   Joseph walked through the gospel with him again and made sure he understood what it meant to be a follower of Jesus and is now meeting with him weekly for New Believer Follow-Up.

We are so ecstatic to see his passion to know Jesus more and our students are so excited to see a fellow student they have been praying for and sharing with make a decision for Christ! John - new believer CSLA
